Create an increase in Cycling in the PCT

By: NHS Harrow

Proposal:

We aim to increase cycling activity within the PCT.  Primarily, cycling is a form of physical activity but it is also encouraging sustainable travel behaviour. This scheme aims to increase physical activity amongst Harrow Primary Care Trust (PCT) employees.  The two largest barriers to cycling behaviour are 1, not having a bike, and 2, not being confident to ride on roads. We aim to reduce both of these barriers by implementing a ‘Tax Free Bike Scheme’ and provide events highlighting safe cycling, bike health checks, bike maintenance and safe routes around Harrow especially between workplaces.

The scheme will initially increase cycling behaviour; this will create a cycling culture in the PCT and will improve the perception of cycling thus increasing the likelihood of adopting cycling as behaviour and have a positive Impact on physical activity levels.

Long term, we aim to encourage every member of staff to see cycling as the norm and to incorporate it into their everyday lives whether as mode for commuting or as a leisure pursuit thereby increasing physical activity levels.

Budget to be spent on launch of the tax free bike scheme (x2) £110, safe cycling training, promotion of safe cycling routes in harrow, workplace cycling (x2) £300, Puncture repair kits (x30) £90
