Hopefully less people travelling to work by car or at least thinking about alternative forms of transport and the environment. It is good publicity and a nice benefit to be able to offer staff.
Not measured - At the moment the number of people who attend the training and then go onto cycle into work is not recorded.
Project aims to provide cycling training for both staff and their families. For a number of years Epsom and St Helier Hospitals Trust has offered training days split into morning and afternoon sessions. The morning sessions are for staff members only, the afternoon sessions are aimed at staff families. The idea is for a relaxed and informal introduction to safe and enjoyable cycling for all.
Gloria, as project coordinator, is able to loan people pool bikes if required.
As one of their main sites, Sutton Hospital, backs onto the Royal Marsden Hospital, they have been able to work in collaboration and share access to cycle training.
The NHS Trust has run cycle training schemes for at least 7 years. Until 2008 the partnership was with the local borough council, but this was not a free service. Now all cycle training is delivered through Smarter Travel Sutton http://www.smartertravelsutton.org/home free of charge. This programme started in October 2008.
The Sutton Hospital Site.
Smarter Travel Sutton – responsible for delivery of all the training.
Alongside this project there have been regular Dr Bike maintenance sessions – funded recently by SWELTRAC. In the last couple of years there have also been improvements made to cycle related facilities such as secure parking areas. There is an active cycle scheme. The provision of showers and locker facilities are being investigated with the view to installing more/re-vamping the existing.
Minimal – staff time, as part of overall role, to implement and administer scheme.
