By: Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust

“Green Mile” is a sustainable travel initiative lead by BCFH NHS. The objective is to encourage uptake of sustainable travel from users within the Patient Transport Service group, reducing the environmental, economical impact & to promote a healthier lifestyle. Our Trust aim to purchase of 75 Oyster Cards, each one being ‘loaded’ with a £4.80 credit charge (for 4 buses) to be used exclusively for Patient Transport Services. Patients who apply for transport on the grounds of homelessness or financial difficulties, or who do not meet the criteria laid down for the allocation of this facility. Historically, patients who qualified for financial subsidies opt for a taxi service which is the least sustainable options in majority of cases. This pre-paid travel card provides a greener travel option for our service users, which we hope to demonstrate as well as the environmental benefits, greener modes of transport promotes a healthier lifestyle. BCFH NHS is spitted into 2 sites, located on the outskirts of Greater London, the journey to and from hospital by public from Enfield & Barnet is scenic, and meanders though key local amenities and in parts, the road join on to marked cycle routes. This pilot has real potential to promote our existing works on Green travel.

An impact assessment will be carried out to measure if the outcome of this project hasmatched it's objective. Each user will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire upontheir arrival to the hospital to gauge their experience & satisfaction of this green initiative. The collated data will be reviewed after 3 months from project start date.

Update June 2011 - After the initial proposal, we have obtained the oyster cards and implemented the initiative of supplying the cards through the cashiers offices on both sites.  Authorisation is sought through the transport office and documented.

Initiative has been advertised on B&CF intranet and also within our news mail, and though a slow uptake, each card issued saves costs to our PTS and Taxi budget and expect higher usage over the coming months.
