Implementation of healthy transport plan

The project was to implement the Trust's healthy transport plan and to make staff, patients and visitors consider more environmentally friendly travel options which would reduce emissions and benefit the individual as well as the environment. This work started around 18 months ago and so we have just completed our first full year.

Initiatives taken forward:

  • Cycle cage - extension of existing model with secured swipe access and CCTV
  • New cycle cage - new project sited next door to main staff entrance and changing facilities
  • Cycle maintenance - Monthly session on each site which is subsidised by the Trust
  • Cycle training - now available for all staff free of charge but paid for by the Trust
  • Access to site - additional pathway to link hospital to existing cycle route
  • Site cycle pathway - installation of new pathway for cyclist and pedestrians
  • Set up quarterly Community Transport Group meetings which the Trust chairs x 2
  • Set up site walking and cycling group meetings x 2
  • Health walks - organised weekly during staff lunchbreaks x 2
  • Car Sharing database - system set up and provision of dedicated bays with easy access to site
  • Motorcycle shelter - new covered unit with CCTV and lighting
  • Promotional events - eg free breakfasts, cycling equipment, high vis gear etc, competitions and publicity
  • Follow up survey of travel patterns
  • Travel information - main reception x 2, noticeboards displaying bus timetables and alternative travel and lifestyle information
  • Roadshows - quarterly with the Smoking Cessation and Cardiac Team
  • Creation of a site specific bus timetable.

Peoples' attitudes, resistance to change, alteratives are not always feasible e.g. bus services, geographical - one hospital is at the top of a steep hill, partnership - dependence on others - buses, local planners, etc., limited funding.
